"Microsoft is stepping up its competition with Linux, expanding its staff to provide competitive resources and commissioning analyst studies to compare Linux with Windows in terms of the cost of running the operating systems, according to an internal Microsoft e-mail.
"You can expect us to turn up the volume on winning against Linux, as well as IBM," wrote Brian Valentine, senior vice president of the Microsoft Windows division, in a Dec. 26 message.
The e-mail exhorts members of the Microsoft sales staff to scrutinize their customers closely to find where Linux might be deployed without the official sanction of customers' IT policymakers. "
