Altiris Deployment Solution for Servers Introduces Provisioning Capabilities for Linux Systems
Posted by Kenneth Farmer, Thursday May 23 2002 @ 01:07PM EDT

Extended capabilities for Deployment Solution specifically address growing demand for Linux-based solutions running on HP ProLiant BL e-Class Server Blades

Altiris Inc., a leader in systems management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning information technology, today announced the development of Linux management extensions for Altiris Deployment Solution for servers. With Deployment Solution, IT managers will now be able to easily deploy and provision systems running Linux on industry-standard servers from a new Web-based console that allows task implementation from any browser on any platform.

Altiris Deployment Solution for servers is included in industry-standard HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack as an integrated HP and Altiris solution that automates the process of deploying and provisioning server software.

New Deployment Solution for servers features to be added for remote Linux provisioning and management include:

System imaging and deployment Power control Software distribution Basic system inventory Script execution Remote file copy Support for PXE and wake-on-LAN technologies Web-based console for task execution

"A software deployment and management solution that addresses Linux systems in addition to Windows is critical to many enterprise systems," said Tyler Smith, vice president of marketing at Altiris. "In addition to one of the most complete deployment offerings for Windows-based systems on desktops, servers and mobile devices, Deployment Solution for servers will now support Linux-based systems to address the established and growing Linux software market."

"We continue to see increased demand from cost-conscious customers from a wide range of companies to deploy Linux on industry-standard HP ProLiant servers," said Judy Chavis, director, HP Corporate Linux Program Office. "The Altiris Deployment Solution, included with the HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack, offers our ProLiant BL e-Class server blade customers a way to rapidly deploy and easily provision blade servers on multiple operating system environments, allowing IT managers the flexibility they need to meet the changing demands of their organizations."

"IDC forecasts call for Linux server operating environment, new license shipments to increase at compound annual growth rate of 18 percent through 2006," said Al Gillen, IDC research director, system software. "At this growth rate, Linux server operating environment shipments will grow from 1.6 million in 2001 to 3.8 million in 2006. The Linux management extensions to Altiris Deployment Solution for servers provide a way to provision and maintain Linux servers that are now appearing in corporate IT infrastructures."

"Altiris now offers Unix SW Delivery SolutionTM and Unix Inventory SolutionTM which have addressed the needs of the Linux and UNIX market segments for some time now," said Poul Nielson, vice president of product strategy at Altiris. "This update of Deployment Solution for servers is the next critical step in meeting our customer's expectations and extending the reach of our products into new markets. As we look to the future we will add capabilities to provision UNIX systems, as well as develop a version of Deployment Solution for servers that runs natively on Linux."

Altiris fills a unique position in the market by being able to provide a comprehensive solution for multiple platforms. Deployment Solution is a complete system management solution that deploys, installs, configures, backs up, restores and manages change on Windows-based desktops, handhelds, mobile computers and servers -- and now Linux.

Pricing and availability Linux management extensions for Altiris Deployment Solution for servers are now in beta and will be released by the end of Q2. Tiered pricing for Deployment Solution for servers starts at $129 per node, $110 per node when purchasing 100 nodes or more.
