The U.S. Department of Energy wants to see a nuclear event without actually blowing up anyone and has hired Hewlett-Packard (Quote, Company Info) to a three-year contract to do the job.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer and printer maker Monday said the DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has handpicked it to develop and demonstrate a graphics visualization system that can show terascale data sets produced by the complex computer simulations.
NNSA is part of the country's nuclear stockpile stewardship program, which keeps tabs on the aging weapons in the U.S. Defense Department's arsenal. Through its Advanced Simulation and Computing (formerly Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative or "ASCI"), NNSA scientists are looking to better understanding the enormous amounts of data produced by supercomputers using hundreds and thousands of processors.
