PR: HP Again No. 1 in High Performance Computing Revenues

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov 25, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

HP (NYSE:HPQ) again was the revenue leader for High Performance Computing (HPC) servers with 35 percent share of the market, according to market research firm IDC's Technical Computing Quarterly Update for Q3 2002.(1)

HP posted the highest revenues in three of the four IDC technical computing market segments with 46 percent in the Technical Capability segment, 62 percent in the Technical Enterprise segment and 27 percent in the Technical Departmental segment. According to IDC, the total HPC market for Q3 was $1 billion.

"The IDC quarterly report is further affirmation that HP's strategy of focusing on innovation and partnerships for the mainstream of the marketplace is proving successful," said Winston Prather, vice president, HP High Performance Technical Computing Division. "This is further evidence that we are executing well on leveraging the combined strengths of HP."

IDC defines the HPC segments that HP ranked No. 1 in as follows:

-- Technical Capability Computers
-- Systems purchased to solve the most demanding problems.
-- Technical Enterprise Computers -- Capacity systems sold for $1 million or more.
-- Technical Departmental Computers -- Capacity systems sold for less than $250,000.

In addition to the solid performances posted by its Superdome and AlphaServer systems, HP saw a significant ramp of Itanium(R) 2-based shipments during the last quarter. HP has recently announced major Itanium wins with academic and technical institutions, including Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Rice University.

Today's IDC market share results complement HP's No. 1 position on the TOP500 Supercomputer Sites list,(2) making this the second consecutive year HP has more sites in the list than any other technology provider. HP posted 137 entries on the list -- more than 25 percent of the sites -- with HP Superdome servers notching 112 entries and HP AlphaServer systems registering 23 and leading the very high end. Also, for the first time, installations using HP's new Itanium 2-based systems appeared on the list and made it into the top 100.
