The Itanium-centric Gelato collaborative got under way last year, backed by Hewlett-Packard. Founded by a seminal group of researchers in universities and governments, its game plan has been to go forth to develop software to advance studies in important research areas like life sciences and physical sciences, in turn accelerating adoption of Linux on Itanium. Gelato’s member community works on Itanium Linux platforms, operating in a virtual space, coming together to share Open Source code, develop computing solutions, and address problems.
One year later, one can say that, without marketing pizzazz and PR dribble, Gelato quietly but steadily is carrying out its mission. NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) and Groupe ESIEE (a French center that trains engineers) last year proceeded to build and manage the Gelato portal, which provides varied resources for running Linux on Itanium. This portal has gained momentum, so much so that, in 2003, Gelato is entitled to indulge in a little PR, which it did last month.
