PSSC Labs Releases CBeST Version 3.0 Cluster Management Software

LOS ANGELES, CA – July 22, 2003 – PSSC Labs Inc., a pioneer in Linux®-based high-performance computing and Beowulf class specialist, unveiled version 3.0 of CBeST, the company’s premier cluster management software. The software will ship fully installed and functional according to the customized specification of the end user.

“With CBeST 3.0, we’ve created our most elegant and easy-to-use cluster management tool”, said Alex Lesser, VP of PSSC Labs. “What we’ve learned from our customers in diverse fields from pharmaceutical research to weather modeling is that they need systems that are optimized for specific tasks so that they can focus on their research and not cluster management. PSSC Labs’ CBeST is currently operating on clusters at several NASA facilities (Ames Research Center, Dryden Flight Research, Goddard Space Center); universities (U.C. – Berkeley, MIT, Columbia) and private companies (British Airways, Lucent, Hitachi). CBeST 3.0 will be delivered in custom clusters for Stanford University and the University of Idaho in the coming weeks.

Innovations like CBeST 3.0 have allowed PSSC Labs to grow in the increasingly competitive field of Linux servers. According to analysts at Gartner, Inc. sales in the sector increased 63 percent from 2001 to 2002, from $1.3 billion to $2 billion. However, even those numbers are not indicative of the trend in Linux-based servers in the United States that saw 90% growth in the fourth quarter of 2002.

Lesser continued, “What’s so exciting about this kind of computing is that with commodity components, a smaller company like PSSC Labs can compete with the likes of IBM and HP to build supercomputers for some of the most interesting research projects in the world.”

Frequently, vendors fail to provide turn-key solutions when delivering clusters of this sort, leaving researchers to spend valuable time reconfiguring the system and failing to utilize the full potential of the machine.
