SGI AND VOLTAIRE BRING HIGH-SPEED INFINIBAND CLUSTERS TO ALTIX FAMILY

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and BEDFORD, Mass. (January 20, 2004)-Silicon Graphics (NYSE: SGI) and Voltaire today announced that they will jointly provide SGI® Altix(tm) server customers with Voltaire InfiniBand solutions, enabling easy creation of high-speed clusters. Voltaire's InfiniBand product line will be particularly useful to customers seeking to cluster multiple SGI® Altix(tm) 350 server nodes. The SGI Altix 350 server, which was introduced Jan. 12, is the only fully scalable Linux® mid-range system purpose built specifically for scientists, design engineers, researchers and other technical computing users.

SGI Professional Services will offer Voltaire InfiniBand switch routers, InfiniBand-to-IP and InfiniBand-to-Fibre Channel routers, InfiniBand adapters, 64-bit Linux InfiniBand software stack and VoltaireVision(tm) InfiniBand Fabric Management software to customers seeking 64-bit Linux cluster solutions based on the SGI Altix platform. The Voltaire solutions also simplify the often difficult task of creating hybrid cluster environments that enhance existing 32-bit server clusters with 64-bit servers.

The two companies will demonstrate their combined solution at the 2004 LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in New York City Jan. 20-23. A total of five Altix 350 nodes in two cluster configurations will be interconnected via Voltaire InfiniBand solutions in the SGI Booth 459, and two other servers will be interconnected in the Voltaire Booth 861. The systems will run real-world bioinformatics, chemistry and database applications across multiple nodes. SGI Altix systems are designed to handle the large data sets and throughput challenges common to high-performance applications for manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, earth and environmental sciences research, genomics and homeland security.

"Scaling out in high-performance computing environments requires extremely high I/O rates, which presents particular difficulties to many clustering environments. The powerful combination of SGI's new Altix 350 server and InfiniBand interconnect solutions from Voltaire enables customers to deploy a complete solution for scaling up and scaling out of complex applications and workloads."

Voltaire's InfiniBand solutions balance high-performance hardware with production-ready standards based software stack for HPC clusters. The result is unmatched performance within InfiniBand clusters and in their connectivity with the existing infrastructure.

The SGI Altix family of servers combines industry-standard 64-bit Linux with the Intel® Itanium® 2 processor family and SGI® NUMAflex(tm) architecture to enable global shared memory systems from a few to hundreds of processors with up to 4 terabytes of shared memory, which is a first for Linux OS-based computing. The Altix 350 server offers breakthrough flexibility and configurability for mid-range configurations, scaling up to 16 processors and 192GB memory per node. It is uniquely capable of independently scaling across processors, shared memory and/or I/O on a single, standard chassis with different expansion modules, making it ideal for demanding technical applications. In combination with Voltaire's InfiniBand solutions, Altix 350 clusters are designed to scale out to thousands of processors, providing customers with the industry's premier cluster solution.
