SteelEye Technology Releases LifeKeeper for Linux v4.6
Posted by Kenneth Farmer, Tuesday November 16 2004 @ 02:26PM EST

SteelEye Technology® Inc., the leading provider of data and application availability management solutions for Linux and Windows, today announced the release of LifeKeeper™ for Linux version 4.6. LifeKeeper provides data replication and high availability for enterprise applications in Linux and Windows environments. This new version supports an increased number of Linux distributions and kernels in the widest range of configuration options available in the Linux market today - protecting open source adopters' freedom of choice.

"Protecting critical applications on Linux is vitally important to us following our decision to migrate our entire IT infrastructure to Linux" said Ole Bjorn Tuftedal, Chief Technology Officer for City of Bergen, Norway. "We already rely on SteelEye LifeKeeper to protect critical applications for our Education Department and welcome this new release as further evidence that SteelEye is determined to provide the widest range of application protection solutions for us."

Partner Endorsements

"The combination of Novell's SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, with its focus on scalability, performance, and security management, and SteelEye LifeKeeper for Linux, with its focus on availability management, is a compelling option for enterprise customers seeking to run mission critical applications on Linux" Said Mark Longwell, Director of Business Development for Novell. "Novell is pleased that SteelEye, a Yes Certified Partner, has delivered LifeKeeper for Linux 4.6 with support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9. We believe the combination of these products provides a solid foundation for customers looking to deploy Linux in the enterprise."

"Emulex is committed to delivering highly robust Linux storage networking connectivity solutions to the enterprise data center," said Mike Smith, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Emulex. "SteelEye's certification of the Emulex LightPulse Fibre Channel host bus adapters and Open Source Linux driver for operation with LifeKeeper for Linux addresses an important customer need, and we will continue working closely with SteelEye to deliver robust solutions for Linux environments."

"Over the last four years, HP and SteelEye have established a solid record of delivering quality Linux solutions that have the highest degree of availability possible," said Carl DCosta, Director of Infrastructure Solution Alliances at HP. "The combination of LifeKeeper for Linux v4.6 and HP Integrity and ProLiant servers running Linux gives customers the high availability and 24x7 access they need for mission-critical applications, while providing them with the price/performance they demand for their IT environments."

Expanded Feature Set

Delivering certification for an ever expanding set of Linux distributions, kernels, applications and hardware configurations, LifeKeeper for Linux v4.6 continues the tradition established by SteelEye of enabling the widest range of high availability configurations available on Linux today through its added support of:

* SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9
* Asianux 1.0
* White Box Enterprise Linux 3.0
* Updated errata kernels for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 and Enterprise Linux 3.0
* Linux 2.6 Logical Volume Manager (LVM2)
* IBM DB2 UDB v8.2
* Oracle 10g
* Sybase 12.5.2
* Emulex Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters
* HP StorageWorks MSA1500 Fibre Channel Storage
* HP StorageWorks MSA 1000 Small Business SAN Kit
* HP MSA and EVA storage on Opteron-based HP servers
* IBM RDAC for multi-pathing on ia64 and Opteron-based IBM serversHP

LifeKeeper for Linux supports the building of active/active and active/standby data and application high availability configurations of up to 32 nodes using x86, ia64, EM64T and Opteron-based servers from Dell, HP, IBM, SGI and others. LifeKeeper supports both shared nothing configurations using data replication and shared storage configurations which can be built using direct-attached shared SCSI, Fibre Channel SANs or Network Attached Storage devices. LifeKeeper clusters may be deployed either within a Local Area Network or across a WAN for disaster recovery.

In addition to the applications noted above, LifeKeeper for Linux delivers out-of-the-box application protection for MySQL, Apache, Sendmail, mySAP, Rational ClearCase, PostgreSQL, Informix, NFS and SAMBA. Through the use of the bundled Software Developer's Kit, any other application can be easily protected by LifeKeeper.

"We continue to respond to market demand by expanding the environments which are supported by LifeKeeper for Linux," said Bob Williamson, Vice President of Products for SteelEye Technology. "Linux has gained substantial traction within the enterprise data center in 2004, and we expect 2005 to be the year that 64-bit capable systems running the 2.6 kernel accelerates widespread adoption of Linux for business critical functions. This release of LifeKeeper positions us well to support that adoption."

Immediate Availability

SteelEye's LifeKeeper for Linux version 4.6 is immediately available and can be purchased worldwide through a variety of SteelEye partners, including HP , IBM, Ingram Micro and an international network of resellers and systems integrators.
