Supermicro Selects LSI Logic MegaRAID SATA Software for a First-to-Market Advantage
Posted by Kenneth Farmer, Tuesday March 29 2005 @ 11:04AM EST

-- MegaRAID Serial ATA (SATA) Software RAID powers high-density, low-cost and reliable servers with proven MegaRAID technology

-- The Supermicro P8SCT is an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 motherboard that targets entry-level workstations and compact 1U servers supporting up to four SATA hard drives

LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) announced today that its MegaRAID(R) Embedded SATA Software RAID was chosen by Supermicro Computer for integration onto its P8SCT to enable the channel, SIs and VARs with a high-performance, cost-effective SATA-optimized workstation or 1U 4-drive server/storage solution.

"Supermicro recognizes LSI Logic as a leader in the RAID industry and has chosen its MegaRAID SATA Software RAID driver, embedded with the Intel(R) 82801FR (ICH6R), to meet our first-to-market strategy and to provide our channel customers with SATA-optimized 64-bit systems," said Tau Leng, Director of System Validation and Qualification at Supermicro. "As serial ATA technology becomes more and more mature, the use of our SATA-optimized workstations and servers has expanded into more serious computing or enterprise environments. The channel can deliver cost-effective SATA solutions, including on-board RAID 10 support and hot-swap functionality to their customers and grow the business in a much wider range."

MegaRAID SATA Software offers RAID support even before the operating system is loaded, which provides customers with a differential benefit in the market with BIOS boot protection. In addition, because it does not use the motherboard's PCI resources, slots can be available for other critical purposes. The newest generation to the MegaRAID SATA Software RAID family features hot device insertion and removal support, hot spare configuration and soft bad block management. MegaRAID SATA software also features the MegaRAID management software suite, which provides users with flexible management and consists of a complete set of OS-level RAID management tools.

"LSI Logic is pleased to supply Supermicro with a SATA Software RAID driver to meet the demands of its customers requiring a built-in SATA controller offering RAID levels 0, 1 and 10," said Siamak Iranpour, Director of Marketing from the LSI Logic RAID Storage Adapters Division. "Based on our proven, market-leading and enterprise-class MegaRAID technology, the MegaRAID SATA Software completes our vast RAID offering, which ranges from Ultra320 SCSI and SAS PCI Express adapters to SATA II RAID adapters and Software RAID drivers."

The Supermicro P8SCT motherboard supports the 64-bit Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor with 800 MHz FSB and the Intel(R) Celeron(R) processor with 533 MHz FSB. The SATA-optimized motherboard in an ATX form factor also supports up to 4 GB DDRII, IPMI 2.0 management and Hyper-Threading.
