Red Herring: Georgia Tech gets Dell computing clusters for the type of complex research that used to be the domain of supercomputers.
Georgia Tech’s College Of Computing said Tuesday it has installed two Dell high-performance computing clusters (HPCCs) for designing new computer chips and other research as a growing number of researchers move away from traditional supercomputers for solving problems.
The machines, made up of Dell’s 64 and 128 PowerEdge 1850 servers, can be joined to create a cluster that can process up to 2.5 teraflops, or trillions of calculations per second. Researchers will use the systems to simulate aircraft design and to design new computer chips.
