From Jets to Potato Chips, Q-Bits to Hobbits, the Experts Are Speaking at SC05

SEATTLE --Oct. 25, 2005-- Mention aerodynamics, and Thomas J. Lange's first thought is the perfect potato chips? That's because SC05 invited speaker Lange is director of modeling and simulation for Procter & Gamble (makers of Pringles potato chips), whose research includes studies of how the aerodynamics of a potato chip affects its path along a conveyor belt.

This November 12-18, the Supercomputing 2005 conference (SC05) sponsored by ACM and IEEE Computer Society will host technology leaders from around the world to speak about everything from the study of tsunamis to the aerodynamics of household products to SC05's "Gateway to Discovery" theme focusing on the future and potential of supercomputing.

SC05 also offers a more traditional view of aerodynamics and fluid dynamics through its Masterworks sessions. Speakers Dan Mooney of Boeing and Mark Pearson of General Electric Aircraft Engines will discuss how high performance computing (HPC) is used in jet engine and aircraft design. Gary White of General Motors (GM) Australia, Chris Seeling of the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing, and Sharan Kalwani of GM bring the topic down to earth with their session discussing HPC in automotive design.

Interested in the big picture? How about "Understanding the Big Wave," a study of tsunamis by invited speakers Laura Kong of UNESCO/IOC International Tsunami Information Centre and Cherri M. Pancake of Oregon State University. Looking at research on a much smaller scale will be George Michaels of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Eric Jakobsson of the University of Illinois getting down to the nanoscale in the Masterworks session on biotechnology.

"Since the early years with Seymour Cray, the ACM/IEEE SC Conference Series has had a tradition of delivering a spectacular lineup of invited speakers," said SC05 Technical Program Chair Jeff Kuehn, Advanced Computing Researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. "This year it is both my honor and privilege to inspire and illuminate our Gateway to Discovery with visionaries whose efforts are charting our journey into the 21st century."

For a serious look at the national importance of HPC, invited speakers Thomas Paul D'Agostino at the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration and Anne Trefethen of the UK e-Science Core Programme will cover critical U.S. applications and science activities in the UK and Europe.

In a more entertaining light, Wu-chang Feng and Michael Zyda are serious about gaming. Feng runs mshmro.com, one of the most popular game communities in the Northwest, when he's not busy at Portland State University studying cheat detection and prevention in gaming. Zyda of the University of Southern California's GamePipe Lab, who is making a science out of gaming and was the principal investigator for America's Army, joins him in this Masterworks session.

For those into pure computer science, the Masterworks storage session has Garth Gibson of Panasas covering storage architecture, followed by James Hughes of Sun Microsystems on data security. For help finding answers in all that storage, catch the HPC Analytics Masterworks speakers, data mining experts Bob Grossman of the National Center for Data Mining and Usama Fayyad of Yahoo!

Fascinated by quantum bits? Join Masterworks speakers Audrius Berzanskis of MagiQ and Geordie Rose of DWave Systems as they discuss quantum crytography and quantum chemistry.

For the experts on hobbits and other entertaining subjects, SC05 has Masterworks speakers Milton Ngan of Weta Digital (credits include the Lord of the Rings film trilogy) on computing visual effects, followed by Jeff Rochlin and Tom Greer of the Walt Disney Company on hatching a digital studio.
